Michael will discuss the safety precautions that go along with the SMAW welding process, machine setup, components, and consumables necessary for SMAW. We will be covering the AWS electrode classification system for SMAW, how to select the correct electrode, and polarity for the type and thickness of material being welded. We will also discuss the operator variables that will help you lay a nice weld bead in the joint by using the correct voltage settings, arc length, work angle, travel angle, and travel speed.

Along with discussing the operator variables, Michael will highlight some tips for striking an arc, maintaining an arc, extinguishing the arc, and filling in craters including tie ins/blending/continuing a weld.
